Interior view of the PortMiami Tunnel showcasing the onsite prefabrication shop

Value Delivered

To accommodate the unique needs of this project, we created an onsite prefabrication shop to decrease labor costs. Our prefabrication services helped the project comply with the Florida Department of Transportation’s Buy America mandate, which requires domestic production of all steel and iron manufacturing.

Client Objectives

The Port of Miami (PortMiami) sought to construct a connecting tunnel to decongest areas of downtown Miami and provide a direct connection from the port to major highways in the area. The tunnel provided an outlet for the expected increase of freight and cruise passenger traffic resulting from the Deep Dredge Project and Panama Canal expansion.

Scope of Services

In addition to onsite prefabrication, we provided 24-hour monitoring and maintenance of the tunnel’s boring machine, controls, and miscellaneous systems.

Our electrical team installed the following systems:

  • Complete conduit systems for medium voltage switch gear, life safety, fire alarm, traffic signaling, street lighting, and pump stations
  • Custom tunnel lighting systems optimized for both daytime and nighttime driving
  • A temporary 13.2-kilovolt power substation for the tunnel boring machine

Client Background

PortMiami is a major seaport located in downtown Miami, FL, at the mouth of the Miami River.
